An Original Vintage Autographed 7 1/2" x 8 1/4" [19 x 21 cm] Still (Learn More) Billie Holiday was a prominent black African American figure in jazz music from the 1930s to the 1950s. She had small appearances in two movies (New Orleans and Symphony in Black), and she also appeared in a jazz musical short called "'Sugar Chile' Robinson, Billie Holiday, Count Basie and His Sextet". Diana Ross' movie, "Lady Sings the Blues", is about Billie Holiday's life, but her name is not used. Some of her works include: Riffin' the Scotch, The Way You Look Tonight, and Carelessly. She passed away in 1959 at the age of 44. She suffered from cirrhosis, and in an incredibly sad course of events, she was arrested and handcuffed for drug possession as she lay on her deathbed. Important Added Info: Note that this still has been personally autographed (signed) by Billie Holiday! Our consignor is a longtime dealer who acquired this signed item among many other purchases in his inventory, and he does not have a certificate of authenticity, but we believe the signature to likely be authentic. Condition: good. The photo was trimmed and someone had put pieces of heavy paper over the borders and later, two of them were removed, which caused surface paper loss in the lower right of the right border and some light stains scattered throughout. A restorer replaced the missing borders, without backing the still, and filled in what was missing from the borders of the image, but they left alone the creases in the still, likely because some are in the autograph, and they did not want to touch that area. Overall, the still was pretty well restored, but you can clearly see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects. It displays pretty well from a reasonable viewing distance, and autographed portraits from this legendary singer in her prime (this is likely from around 1945) are beyond rare, because most of the signed portraits are from the 1950s, when her drug problems had taken a major toll on her!
