Blanche Noyes was an actress-turned aviator from the 1920s to the 1970s. She gave up her acting career after marrying a pilot and learning how to fly from him, becoming one of the first ten women to receive a transport pilot's license. In 1929, she also became Ohio's first licensed female pilot! Noyes later took a pilot's job with the federal Bureau of Air Commerce's National Air Marking Program, where she traveled and trained others to paint town and airport names, directional arrows, mileage, and, later, latitude and longitude on rooftops and anywhere else a pilot could see the air markings. She and her colleagues saw to the painting of 13,000 air markers before World War II, after which they were blacked out, then later restored. Noyes passed away in 1981 at the age of 81.
