A Linenbacked French Special Poster (measures 38 1/4" x 54 1/4" [97 x 138 cm]) (Learn More)

The Frisco, the circa 1905 French poster featuring Louis Galice artwork of a woman carrying a violin case and a black man dressed in a suit and top hat, with an earring in his ear and a cane in his hand. It is very interesting to note that the woman clearly seems to be appreciative of the man's attention, judging by the expression on her face! We found a webpage that said that this poster is very unlike the American posters of this period, which had negative stereotyped images of black men, and that page speculated that it was only because this poster was printed in France that this was true. The poster has the translated warning of "Any holder of this poster will be prosecuted according to the law" in tiny letters at the bottom, probably to deter people from stealing the poster! If anyone knows more about this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here.
Artist: Louis Galice

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had small tears and tiny paper loss on parts of some folds, with a few small areas of paper loss in non-fold areas, and some pinholes around the edges. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was well backed. At some point after it was backed, it was slightly roughly handled, and it acquired three 1" creases in the lower right that are in the excess linen, but extend into the blank border (see our image).
