An Original Vintage Promotional Brochure (measures 10 3/4" x 14" [27 x 36 cm]; 3 pages) (Learn More)

Richard Arlen was born Sylvanus Richard Van Mattimore in 1899 and was a pilot in the Royal Canadian Flying Corps in World War I, but he never saw action. After the war, it took him several years to find himself, and he was discovered by Hollywood in the early 1920s, but it still took him several years of very minor roles (many uncredited) before he got his big break as one of the leads in "Wings" in 1927. He became a lead star, and had no trouble with the transition to sound, but his career went downhill in the late 1930s. He became deaf at the end of the 1940s, but an operation restored his hearing, and he continued in movies into the 1960s. He passed away in 1976 at the age of 76 AND Andy Devine was a supporting actor from the 1920s to the 1970s. He was "Cookie" to Roy Rogers in ten movies, and also "Jingles" to Guy Madison's Wild Bill Hickok in a popular radio and TV series, and probably his best remembered movie role was in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. He not only appeared in over 400 movies, but he also hosted a children's show called "Andy's Gang", which has cult status and which also featured Froggy the Magic Gremlin! He passed away in 1977 at the age of 71.
Important Added Info: Note that Richard Arlen and Andy Devine were teamed together in a series of movies by Universal (they were unrelated, except that both actors were in them). This special brochure was sent by Universal to theaters to try to get them to book these movies. It is blank on the back of half of it, which perhaps was where they addressed it and sent it as a mailer without an envelope.
