Who Goes There?, the 1910s U.S. World War I (WWI) Recruitment poster ("Where? Anywhere! On land or sea or in the air you'll find Uncle Sam's Marines"; "They Go first!"; "Apply for enlistment at U.S. Marine Corps Recruiting Station 313 Custom House Building, Baltimore, Md.") encouraging citizens to enlist in the Marine Corps, featuring much border art of soldiers all over the world by Axel Tornrose! Note that the U.S. Marine Corps was founded in 1775 as the "fighting branch" of the U.S. Navy. Most people think of the Marines are a completely separate branch of the military, but actually, they are still closely tied to the Navy (although many Marines don't like to think about that)! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Axel Tornrose Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare poster. We have never auctioned one in all our years of auctioning! Note that this is one of seventeen wonderful World War I posters we were consigned, which we are auctioning in separate auctions. All of them are extremely fragile and in urgent need of restoration, but all of them CAN be "rescued", and after proper restoration they will display wonderfully (and many of them are incredibly rare). Please read our condition description below and look at our super-sized image before bidding on any of these great posters! Condition: fair. The poster is rippled and stained throughout and the stains are pretty significant down the center of the poster in that they affect the integrity of the paper. There are tears and paper loss in parts of the borders, with paper loss in the lower left border that affects the edge of the bottom left image. This is the kind of poster that responds really well to restoration! It is likely that many or most of the stains can be removed chemically, and after proper restoration the poster will look fantastic, but bear in mind the poster's condition and the cost of restoration before bidding on it.
