An Original Vintage 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Still (Learn More)

Robert Florey was a French writer and director from the 1920s to the 1950s. Some of his movies included: Tarzan and the Mermaids, The Cocoanuts, Monsieur Verdoux, and he contributed to the script for the 1931 Frankenstein AND Al 'Fuzzy' St. John was an actor from the 1910s to the 1950s. He is best remembered for his comedy supporting roles in several movies, including: The Scarecrow, The High Sign, King of the Bullwhip, Hopalong Cassidy Returns, and The Dance of Life. He appeared in a huge number of comedy shorts starting in 1913, and he had no trouble making the transition to sound films, appearing in 150 features!
Important Added Info: Note that Robert Florey's early credits are very difficult to track down! We know that he was a writer for French movie magazines, and that he came to Hollywood in the very early 1920s, where he started out as a gag writer on comedy shorts. In 1924, he was signed by MGM as an assistant director, and became a full director at Paramount in 1928. This great still is apparently from September 1921 (because it is written on the back), and it is from when he was writing comedy gags for Al St. John (who was doing comedy shorts at that time, but who later became the famous western comic sidekick, Al 'Fuzzy' St. John). The back of the still says it is from a Sunshine Comedy, but it doesn't say which one. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

Condition: good. The still was used in a newspaper or magazine, and there is some touch up paint to the right of Florey's head, so it would show better in the printed article. There is a tiny stain in the left of Florey's hair, with some creases and a pinhole in each corner.
