An Autographed Color 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] REPRODUCTION Photo (Learn More) Sally K. Ride was an astronaut and physicist from the 1970s to the 1990s. She was the first American woman in space in 1983, and the third overall. Ride flew on the Challenger twice. She passed away in 2012 at the age of 61 from pancreatic cancer. General Donald Kutyna revealed that she had discreetly provided him with key information about O-rings (namely, that they become stiff at low temperatures) that eventually led to identification of the cause of the Challenger explosion. It was revealed after her passing that Ride has been in a relationship with a woman for 27 years, making her the first known LGBT astronaut!
