Date Sold 4/16/2023Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Unfolded Belgian Movie Poster (measures 24 1/4" x 33 1/4" [62 x 84 cm]) (Learn More) Charlie Chan in Paris, the 1935 Lewis Seiler France Asian detective mystery crime thriller (based on the characters by Earl Derr Biggers) starring Warner Oland (in the title role as Charlie Chan), Mary Brian, Thomas Beck, Erik Rhodes, Keye Luke, Dorothy Appleby, John Miljan, and Henry Kolker. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is a rare "pre-War" Belgian poster (see below), which we have never auctioned before! Not only that, but we have never auctioned a U.S. poster on this title other than the window card. We have no idea why this one title is so much more rare than the other Warner Oland Charlie Chans, but it definitely is! We are also currently auctioning a first release Swedish poster from this movie in a separate auction! Prior to World War II, Belgian posters were much larger than the ones from after the war, and they are extremely rare (because during WWII, there was a massive paper shortage in Belgium, and they took virtually every poster and map, and printed new posters on the backs of them!). Condition: good to very good. The poster has areas of paper loss down the left border, but almost all of it is blank white paper. There is a tiny bit extending into the purple background, and there is tiny paper loss in just that same place on the right border, both at the ends of the horizontal fold. There are creases and scuffs along parts of the folds, with some other creases scattered throughout. After a relatively simple linenbacking, the poster will display really well, but bear the above in mind before bidding on this super rare poster! Learn More about condition grades
