An Original Vintage Linenbacked Special Movie Poster (measures 13 3/4" x 42" [35 x 107 cm]) (Learn More) Panama and the Canal from an Aeroplane, the 1914 Robert G. Fowler silent Panama Canal airplane aviation travel documentary ("Surveying the canal from a height of a thousand feet"; "in six parts"; "Waiting for the labor train"; "Steam shovel at work in Culebra Cut"; "Gatun locks one in operation adjoining one empty"; "Market place in Panama City"; "Native burden bearers"; "Street in Panama"; "The feature film sensation of the century") produced by George F. Cosby and M.B. Dudley. Note that this is surely one of the very first airplane aviation movies, where a pilot and cameraman (Robert G. Fowler & Ray Duhem) went up in an extremely early airplane (a 1912 Gage biplane) and they flew low over Panama City and the canal (which was still under construction), and took footage of those areas, which was then compiled into this documentary! Note that director Robert G. Fowler donated the plane to the Smithsonian's National Air & Space Museum. It is now known as the Fowler-Gage, and is on display at the Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy Annex in Chantilly, Virginia. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that in the past, we have seen a few one-sheets from this movie, but now we are offering two very unusual posters! They both measure 14" x 42", and resemble inserts, but they are 6" longer, and they were printed on thinner "one-sheet-like" paper. They came to us separately linenbacked, but we think they are what we have seen from a few later 1910s movies, which is what we called "double inserts". These were a pair of 14" x 42" posters that were printed side by side, so the combined measurement was 28" x 42", the size of many one-sheets in the 1910s. Theaters would order these, and they could cut them down the middle, and then have two posters for the price of one! The two posters would have different images, so they could also be displayed side by side. Since these two were linenbacked separately, we are auctioning them in two separate auctions. They are certainly extremely historic, both from being from a very early movie, and also from being from one of the first movies about aviation (and perhaps the first documentary shot from an airplane)! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had some creases scattered throughout, with very minor border wear. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well! Learn More about condition grades
