An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Japanese Movie Poster (measures 14 1/2" x 20 1/2") (Learn More) Popeye and Cartoon Shorts, the late 1940s Japanese poster promoting animated animation cartoon shorts as well as live-action sports documentary shorts. Note that the poster features Popeye the Sailor as well as other cartoon characters and images from what appear to be sports documentaries. The poster lists multiple studios, and shows their logos, Allied Artists, Columbia, MGM, Paramount, RKO, 20th Century Fox, United Artists, Universal and Warner Bros. Perhaps this was a sort of "stock" poster exhibited outside Japanese theaters after World War II (WWII) and was designed to tell theatergoers that the theater also showed short subjects along with the advertised featured. Note that there were several Japanese posters that were for these shorts and are similar, so we list them under a single listing. Each of them has the MPEA logo printed on them, which was put on posters in Japan right after World War II. If anyone knows more about this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Condition: very good. This poster was linenbacked, and one of the following is true: either the poster had minor defects, and was well backed, OR it had more significant defects, but they were extremely well restored, OR it had some very minor defects that were not completely restored, and are slightly noticeable. You can tell which of the above is the case for this particular poster by reading our "Pre-Restoration Defects & Quality of Restoration" description and also by looking at our "super-sized" image of the actual poster (we are the only major auction company we know of that gives accurate detailed pre-restoration information about linenbacked posters to our bidders, but we wish everyone did!). The poster was folded across the middle and there is faint wear on that foldline and tiny tears in the borders. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster is "lifting" from the linen across the bottom border (any talented restorer can re-glue this area without re-backing the poster). Learn More about condition grades
