An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Pressbook (pb; measures 12 1/2" x 18 3/4" [32 x 48 cm]; 12 pages) (Learn More) Up the River, the 1930 John Ford prison baseball sports romantic crime comedy ("You bet it's funny - a Movietone laugh riot"; about a prison trustee in a co-ed prison who falls in love with a female trustee, and they both are paroled, and try to start life over, but criminals try to blackmail them over their past, and then their best friends from in prison escape so that they can help the young lovers get a fair shake in life; in addition, there is are comedy sequences with a prison baseball game and a prison vaudeville show!) starring Spencer Tracy (in his first feature film, after being in three shorts), Claire Luce, Warren Hymer, Humphrey Bogart (in his first feature film, after being in two shorts), and Joan Marie Lawes. This movie is most memorable for having the feature film debuts of both Humphrey Bogart and Spencer Tracy, and also for being one of legendary director John Ford's first sound films! Note that Humphrey Bogart was as much the star of this movie as Spencer Tracy, but he was fourth billed, while Spencer Tracy was top billed, and we are not sure why! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that, as noted above, this was Humphrey Bogart's feature film debut. There are three images of him on the cover and he appears on both half-sheets, the insert, window card, and some of the lobby cards (all of these are pictured inside the pressbook). He is not pictured on the one-sheet and larger posters, because they all have cartoony art! There is also a newspaper story about him that starts out "Humphrey Bogart is destined to become one of the screen's foremost leads, and amazingly, for once, the studio hype was correct, although it would take seven years for it to start to become true, and a dozen years for it to become fully true! Note that items from this early John Ford movie (which featured very early performances by Spencer Tracy and Humphrey Bogart!) are BEYOND rare! In all our years of auctioning, we have only auctioned four 8x10 stills and no other first release movie paper items from this movie! Note that we have provided an image of the front and back covers of this pressbook (if the back cover is not the poster page, we photographed the interior poster page), and of course, the winner of this auction will receive the entire single pressbook we are auctioning (plus any supplements or heralds described above)! Also note that this pressbook is complete and uncut! Given that theater owners received pressbooks partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a pressbook that IS complete and uncut! Note that we are auctioning 74 pressbooks in this Part II of our March Major Auction. 62 of those come from a single collector who was attempting to assemble EVERY pressbook from movie serials that were based on either comic book or comic strip characters (see those auctions for more about those). This is one of the 12 other pressbooks in this auction that are also extremely rare, and most of these 12 are ones we have never auctioned before (and may never auction again)! Condition: good to very good, NO CUTS. The pressbook is complete and uncut. It was folded two times across the middle, with a few stains on the cover and some wear around the edges. We could re-fold it for shipping, but it seems a shame to do so, so we will only do so if the new owner requests that we do so. Learn More about condition grades
