An Undated (probably 1930s) Re-Release Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More)

Madame Du Barry, the 1934 William Dieterle historical France royalty romantic comedy starring Dolores Del Rio (in the title role as Madame Du Barry), Reginald Owen (as King Louis XV), Verree Teasdale, Victor Jory, Osgood Perkins, Anita Louise (as Marie Antoinette), and Jesse Scott. Note that there were three silent versions of this movie in the 1910s. In 1930 came the first sound version with Norma Talmadge, called "Du Barry, Woman of Passion", then in 1935 came "I Give My Heart", an English movie. In 1943, there was "Du Barry Was a Lady", with Lucille Ball, but that was a comedy and was not from the same source as this movie and the earlier versions.

Important Added Info: Note that ANY movie paper items from this movie are incredibly rare. We have only previously auctioned a window card, two heralds, and some stills from this movie (and NO other movie paper) until we received this lobby card! There is a great mystery about this lobby card. It is printed on a "linen" paper, and Warner Bros. did not start doing that until some time in 1936. Also, the movie seems like it should have been released as a First National Vitaphone production in 1934. That would make this card a re-release, likely from 1936 or 1937. However, we looked at every single item on this movie we previously auctioned and every single one of them has billing just like this, and they all look like "first release". How to explain all this? One possible answer is that the IMDb says that this movie was "placed on the Catholic Church's condemned list", and perhaps because of this, it was not first released in 1934, and that by the time it was first released, Warners had shifted the credit and started using linen lobby cards. But to be safe, we are calling this a re-release. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has.

Condition: good. The card has darkened somewhat, typical of Warner Bros. linen lobby cards of this period. There are tack holes in the corners and in the center of the bottom border. There are many faint stains in the background areas surrounding the image, but almost none within the image. This is the sort of card that responds really well to professional restoration. It is likely that much or all of the smudges and stains can be removed through chemical means, and of course, most of the pinholes are in the blank borders, and after proper restoration, the card will look fantastic. Please look closely at our images of the front and back of this card before bidding. Note that this card is completely unrestored and there is not a single piece of tape on either the front or back!
