eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 9s0400 CLIFTON WEBB GUESTBOOK PAGE signed 11x11 page 1930s Michael Rennie, John Hodiak & many more! Date Sold 9/5/2021Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Autographed Guestbook Page (measures 11" x 11 1/4" [28 x 29 cm]) (Learn More) Clifton Webb guestbook page. Clifton Webb was one of Hollywood's most "confirmed bachelors" (he never married, and he lived with his mother until her passing, when he was quite old). That didn't stop him from throwing great parties! At some point in the early 1950s (most of these pages are dated, but this one is not), he had one of his parties and he had a "guestbook" that the guests signed, and this page is undated at the top (probably becaue that portion was trimmed off), and on it are signatures of 20 attendees, including Anne Baxter Hodiak, Ethel Barrymore, Van Johnson, John Hodiak, Michael Rennie, and others that we can't quickly identify (but likely you can with a little studying!). After Mr. Webb's passing, this page was removed from his guestbook. Of course, Clifton Webb was a well known character actor who achieved stardom at an advanced age! He was born in 1889, and he was primarily a stage actor, appearing in a small number of movies, starting in silents. In 1944, at the age of 55 he achieved stardom with his role as Waldo Lydecker in Laura. He parlayed that fame into starring roles in movies, most notably in the series of Mr. Belvedere movies, where he was a male nanny. He was gay, but that remained a "secret" throughout his life, and he lived with, and was devoted to, his beloved mother throughout most of his adult life, and they were inseparable. When she died in 1960, he went into a major decline, both mentally and physically, and he made only one more movie. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this guestbook page has been personally autographed (signed) by TWENTY people: Michael Rennie, John Hodiak, Ethel Barrymore, Ethel Merman, George Cukor, Charles Brackett, Sol Siegel, Howard Dietz, Arthur Schwartz, and others that we can't quickly identify (but likely you can with a little studying!). Our consignor is a longtime collector who purchased this signed item from a reputable dealer. He does not have a certificate of authenticity, but we believe the signatures to surely be authentic.
UPDATED 08/27/2021: Note that we have updated the auction with the names of additional autographs that have been identified.
