A Belgian Advertising Poster (measures 11 3/4" x 15 3/4" [30 x 40 cm]) (Learn More)

L'Insectoline, the circa 1940s Belgian poster advertising a D.D.T. insecticide product. Note that D.D.T. (Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) was first synthesized in 1874, but its ability to kill insects was not discovered until 1939. It was widely used in World War II to kill mosquitoes to protect soldiers and civilians, and it 1945, it was first sold publicly in the United States. Right from the start, people worried about its possible harmful effects on humans (especially its connection to cancer), but it was not until the 1962 book "Silent Spring" by Rachel Carson, when public awareness grew drastically, and over the next decade, D.D.T. was banned almost everywhere. But this great Belgian poster shows a young child delightfully spraying D.D.T., blissfully unaware of the danger to himself and others! If anyone knows more about this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here.
If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that the poster has an artist's signature on it, but we cannot read it. If anyone knows the name of this artist, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

Condition: good to very good. The poster was created with two small holes at top center with a string between them, so that it could be hung and displayed. At some later point, someone had the poster dry-mounted onto a white backing board, no doubt when it was framed. It has some darkening around the edges but is otherwise in pretty nice condition, and the original string is present.
