Note that Chaplin won an Oscar for "versatility and genius in acting, writing, directing and producing The Circus". Though initially nominated for Best Actor, the Academy decided to remove Chaplin's name from the competitive classes and instead give him a Special Award. AND The Gold Rush, the classic 1925 Charles Chaplin Alaska Yukon rags-to-riches slapstick silent comedy ("A Dramatic Comedy"; "Written and Directed [and scored] by Charlie Chaplin") starring Charlie Chaplin (Charles Chaplin), Mack Swain, Tom Murray, Georgia Hale, and Henry Bergman. Note that this was the movie with the classic sequence of the snowbound Chaplin eating his shoe! Also note that the movie was filmed "on location", but only for a small part of the movie did they go to the High Sierras. For the close scenes, Chaplin had artificial mountains created out of chicken wire and burlap covering 200 tons of plaster, 285 tons of salt, and 100 barrels of flour, and the artificial ice and snow was made of the same materials. 4 carloads of "cornfetti" were used for the blizzard scenes. They also transported much of the same material to the Sierra mountains to enhance the scenes shot there. The entire production took over a year, from first filming to final cut! AND The Kid, the classic 1921 Charlie Chaplin silent juvenile family relationship slapstick comedy ("Charles Chaplin in the comedy he took a whole year to produce"; "6 Reels of Joy"; about a man who repairs broken windows who "adopts" an abandoned child; the boy goes around breaking windows for his "father" to repair!; events put their relationship in jeopardy) starring Charlie Chaplin (billed as Charles Chaplin), Edna Purviance, Jackie Coogan (who would grow up to become Uncle Fester on TV's "The Addams Family"; in the title role as the Kid), Carl Miller, Granville Redmond, and May White If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
