In 3 hilarious roles!"; "Based on the book 'Red Alert' by Peter George"; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award) starring Peter Sellers (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; playing three roles: President Merkin Muffley, Group Captain Lionel Mandrake, and the title role of Dr. Strangelove), George C. Scott (as General Buck Turgidson), Sterling Hayden (as Brigadier General Jack D. Ripper), Keenan Wynn (as Colonel Bat Guano), Slim Pickens (as Major T.J. King Kong; Sellers had originally been cast in this role but trouble with the Texas accent and a broken ankle caused Kubrick to recast), Tracy Reed (billed as "Introducing Tracy Reed as 'Miss Foreign Affairs'"), and Peter Bull (as the Russian Ambassador) NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that three of these stills don't measure exactly 8" x 10" (their measurements are above), but they are not trimmed (they were sent by the studio in these exact sizes). Also note that there are two great candids with Stanley Kubrick on the set (see our images). Finally, note that two of the stills are from the 1965 continuous first release. The film opened in late January of 1964 and was still in first release in 1965 so they are not from a re-release.
UPDATED 10/04/2019: Note that a knowledgeable collector pointed out that one of the stills (2nd down in the 2nd column) shows Sellers as four characters. However, he only portrayed three in the final film! Sellers was originally cast as Maj. 'King' Kong but he had difficulty with the Texas accent and when he broke his ankle, Kubrick decided to cast Slim Pickens in the role. This explains why the rare image of Sellers as Maj. Kong has been scribbled over, because they were letting Miss Apikian know that it was an image that was not in the movie. Note that this item is from the personal collection of Nevart Apikian, who wrote an entertainment column for the Syracuse Post Standard for nearly 50 years. We have been consigned 57 items that we are auctioning in 57 separate auctions! This collection consists of promotional material this columnist was sent from studios about movies that were about to open, in order to help her write a more complete review of the movies. In some cases, she was invited to special premieres and publicity events! She was often sent presskits or sets of stills, but often the studio included additional items, some of which were never sent to theaters, and were likely only sent to other columnists. This collection includes sets of stills, presskits, and other items, and all of the sets of stills and presskits come with supplements, and in some cases they have areas underlined or noted on the fronts and some have long handwritten information within by Ms. Apikian, from when she either watched the premiere or conducted interviews with people connected to the movie, in preparation writing her review. While we have auctioned sets of stills or presskits from all of these movies before, many of them contain additional items that we have NEVER auctioned before (and may never auction again, given that they were likely only sent to a select group of reviewers). Condition: very good. Learn More about condition grades
