An Original Vintage 7 3/4" x 9 3/4" [20 x 25 cm] Stage Play Still (Learn More)

Native Son, the 1941 - 1942 Orson Welles Broadway stage play production (of the work by Paul Green and Richard Wright; adapted from Richard Wright's novel of the same name, about a young black African American man who, through a series of unfortunate events, kills a white woman, and the consequences of that action) starring Canada Lee, Frances Bavier, Everett Sloane, Philip Bourneuf, and Ray Collins. Note that this was a fascinating production! Orson Welles managed to direct it at the same time he was directing Citizen Kane in Hollywood, and the two productions opened a short time apart. The producer of this play was John Houseman, and the play originally had significant differences from the novel, with a tacked on religious conversion at the end, and Houseman was the one who caused that to be deleted. The performance by Canada Lee in the starring role was highly praised by critics, and note that Frances Bavier would much later achieve fame as "Aunt Bee" on The Andy Griffith Show. Finally, note that there was a movie made from this same play and novel in 1951 (it was considered too controversial until then), and that the lead role was played by author Richard Wright himself.
Important Added Info: Note that this still, which measures 7 3/4" x 9 3/4" [20 x 25 cm], is beyond rare. We have never auctioned any other artifact from this stage play production until we were consigned this great candid stage play still, which shows director Orson Welles conferring with author Richard Wright (and the snipe on the back pretty much guarantees it is from when the show was first produced in 1941 or 1942)!

Condition: good. There are creases and tiny bits of surface paper loss around the edges, more so in the corners, and there are faint partial thumbnail creases scattered in the image, but they are mostly only noticeable when the still is tilted to the light. There are some faint horizontal scuffs in the center of the black background between the two men.
