The Mark of Zorro, the 1940 Rouben Mamoulian south-of-the-border masked hero romantic action adventure thriller ("The jagged mark of his sword struck terror to every heart - but one!"; "Who was the bold masked adventurer whose mocking laughter left terror in every heart - but one?"; "Based on the story by Johnston McCulley") starring Tyrone Power Jr. ("in the most famous of all screen roles"; playing both the title role of Zorro and his alter ego Don Diego Vega), Linda Darnell (just 16 years old during filming!), Basil Rathbone, Gale Sondergaard, Eugene Pallette, Montagu Love, J. Edward Bromberg, Robert Lowery, Chris-Pin Martin, and Janet Beecher. Note that Zorro was created in the 1919 novel "The Curse of Capistrano" by Johnston McCulley, which led to the 1920 movie "The Mark of Zorro" starring Douglas Fairbanks Sr., and over the years, there have been a very large number of Zorro movies and TV shows, but certainly, this 1940 version is one of the very best remembered and liked of all of them!

Important Added Info: Note that this poster is surely one of the most desirable 1940s U.S. movie posters there is! Not only does it have wonderful art of Tyrone Power (in and out of costume), but it also has beautiful young Linda Darnell (who had just turned 17 when the movie was released, and it also has the additional flourish added by the artist of having Power's sword piercing the "Z" of "Zorro"! In addition, the style B poster is a text-only poster, which is of course disappointing. This style A poster is very rarely offered for sale or at auction. We have only auctioned it twice before, once in 1996, and once in 2004, 12 years ago, and both of those examples were linenbacked, where this poster is not backed (the first one we have auctioned that is not backed). It may be many years before we offer it again, backed or unbacked!

Note that this one-sheet is one of the 28 folded one-sheets in this Part I of eMoviePoster.com's December Major Auction that were not consigned to us by Dominique Besson. It was consigned to us by another collector, but that in no way diminishes this poster, and it fits well with the Besson collection.

What is the Dominique Besson collection? He started collecting movie posters in 1981, and became a dealer in French and European posters in 1994, and has remained as a top dealer ever since!

But in addition, 30 years ago, Dominique began collecting U.S. one-sheets, first those with Saul Bass art, and then adding Alfred Hitchcock posters, then Humphrey Bogart, and he finally ended up collecting in an amazing total of 47 different categories, purchasing the posters from all over the world!

This is not all of the Dominique Besson collection we are auctioning. In addition, there are approximately 200 more folded one-sheets that will be in Part IV of this special auction (ones from the 1970s to present), and there are approximately 100 unfolded one-sheets that will be in Part III (including many great ones).
