A Linenbacked French Advertising Poster (measures 27 3/4" x 76 1/2" [70 x 194 cm]) (Learn More) Le Journal (literally translates to "The Journal") was a Paris, France daily newspaper published from 1892 to 1944. During World War I (WWI), the paper was at the center of an intrigue involving the German government which was alleged to be attempting to gain influence in France and promote pacifist propaganda by buying French newspapers. Artist: Oge Important Added Info: Note that Paul Kruger was one of the dominant political and military figures in 19th-century South Africa, and President of the South African Republic (or Transvaal) from 1883 to 1900. Nicknamed Uncle Paul, he came to international prominence as the face of the Boer cause against Britain during the Second Boer War of 1899–1902. He remains a controversial and divisive figure; admirers venerate him as a tragic folk hero, and critics view him as the obstinate guardian of an unjust cause. Kruger published his memoirs in 1902 and this poster is promoting the serialization of that work. Note that this poster can be sent in a standard size tube, but because it is very long, it can't be combined with other linen posters, so that is why it is in this part of our Major Auction, together with linen posters that need to be shipped in very long tubes. Please bear in mind that it must be sent separately from other posters before you place your bid on this poster. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had tiny bits of paper loss and creases along many folds. It had many smudges and scuffs scattered throughout, with a 6" irregular tear in the left of the bottom border. The poster was backed onto a thin linen with no restoration, and it has tax stamps attached to the upper right that were surely from when the poster was first displayed. In spite of its many defects, one could certainly display it as it is, or one might choose to have it removed from the old linen and professionally re-backed. Learn More about condition grades
