An Unfolded German Travel Poster (measures 33" x 48 1/4" [84 x 123 cm]) (Learn More)

Norddeutscher Lloyd (known in English as North German Lloyd) was a German shipping company which was founded by Hermann Henrich Meier and Eduard Crusemann in Bremen, Germany in 1857. It developed into one of the most important German shipping companies of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and was instrumental in the economic development of Bremen and Bremerhaven. In 1970, the company merged with Hamburg America Line (HAPAG) to form Hapag-Lloyd AG.
Artist: Feldtmann
Important Added Info: Note that this poster is promoting travel to England and Ireland aboard the steamship Columbus. The ship made her maiden voyage in April 1924 and at the time, she was the German merchant marine's largest, fastest ocean liner, and was one of the first liners to have an outside swimming pool installed on her top deck, as well as a platform for night-time dancing. With the building of the Bremen and Europa, the Columbus was supplanted as the queen of the NDL fleet, and in 1929, she was given a refit to make her resemble her younger, larger and faster running mates. This included the addition of two larger smokestacks and replacement of the reciprocating engines with geared steam turbines. Near the beginning of World War II (WWII), the Columbus was destroyed by her own crew after refusing to surrender to the British. Her passengers and crew were taken aboard an American warship (America was neutral at the time) as rescued seamen, not as prisoners of war as they would have been had the British picked them up.

Note that this poster must be sent in a tube that is over 32" long (which is why it is in this set of auctions). You can tell how long the tube will need to be by adding 2 inches to the shorter dimension of the length or width (so 40x60s need to be sent in a 42 inch long tube, etc). Most of these posters (with the notable exception of paper banners) CAN be combined in the same tube together, with a few exceptions. Bear in mind that a very long tube (42 inches or longer) will cost a lot more to send than a 30" tube, so bear that in mind before bidding on this poster.

Condition: good to very good. The poster has several creases and tears of varying lengths (generally 1" or less but some are larger) along portions of some edges and several are repaired with tape from the back that has bled through to the front (they can be clearly seen in our image). The art of the poster is in pretty nice condition and the tape staining is mostly restricted to the edges, and after a pretty simple linenbacking the poster will look great!
