An Unfolded Russian Travel Poster (measures 18 1/4" x 24 1/2" [46 x 62 cm]) (Learn More)

See USSR, the 1930s Russian Intourist travel poster ("An udarnik of the Magnitogorsk steel mills") encouraging people to visit Magnitogorsk, the industrial city which contains the largest iron and steel works in the country. Note that this posters features an Anatolli Skurikhin photograph of a worker holding his hand above his head. Intourist was founded in 1929 and served as the primary travel agency for foreign tourists in the Soviet Union. As such, it was often staffed by NKVD and later KGB officials. During the late Stalin era, the number of foreigners visiting the Soviet Union was very low as state officials actively discouraged travelers. After Stalin's death, tourism was allowed again, and by the early 1970s, there were 4,000,000 travelers yearly. The company was privatized in 1992.
Artist: Anatolli Skurikhin

Condition: good. The poster has darkened substantially on back and slightly unevenly on the front. It has a few tears in some areas (see our image).
