An Original Vintage Unfolded World War I Poster (measures 30" x 40" [76 x 102 cm]) (Learn More) U.S. Marines: Another Notch Chateau Thierry, the 1918 World War I (WWI) poster featuring art of a soldier smiling while carving a notch into his rifle in celebration of another victory of the American Expeditionary Force (AEF), this time at the battle of Chateau-Thierry (led by General John J. "Black Jack" Pershing). Note that the U.S. Marine Corps was founded in 1775 as the "fighting branch" of the U.S. Navy. Most people think of the Marines are a completely separate branch of the military, but actually, they are still closely tied to the Navy (although many Marines don't like to think about that)! The Battle of Chateau Thierry was fought on May 31st of 1918 and was one of the first actions of the AEF, which consisted of troops from both the United States Army and Marine Corps units. These units were the newest troops on the front in France and just barely out of training. Artist: Adolph Treidler Condition: very good. There is some tattering, smudging, and minor creasing around the edges of the poster. The poster is otherwise in pretty nice condition, especially considering its age!
