An Original Vintage Campaign Book (measures 9 1/4" x 12 1/4" [23 x 31 cm]; 16 pages). Also included is an "MGM Shorts" supplement that has 4 pages (see below) (Learn More)

MGM 1931-32 ("He's makin' 'em awful big"; "But the bubble is bound to burst"), the 1931 studio campaign book. This is an incredibly rare find! Somewhere around 1932, it seems that MGM stopped making the large size campaign books, and only made small booklets, called "Screen Forecast". It is possible that they did make large campaign books for each year and that they are just incredibly rare, because they never come up for sale. In 1940, MGM launched The Lion's Roar, a deluxe magazine which took the place of campaign books. But in the 1930s, mostly only the small Screen Forecast booklets survived. But now, we were consigned this large size magazine with MGM for 1931-32! It is "only" 16 pages, but it is otherwise like the regular campaign books, and it even has a 4-page supplement for MGM shorts, with a great cover image of Leo the Lion (see our image). So we wonder if this was the final large size campaign book they made (perhaps economizing because of The Great Depression), or perhaps there are other larger size ones like this one waiting to be discovered. This book contains 16 pages with information about their upcoming stars, giving how many movies each of them would be appearing it, including "2 from Buster Keaton", "1 from Stan Laurel-Oliver Hardy", "2 from Greta Garbo", etc. There are also pages of ads about how much better MGM is than other studios! This book is incredibly rare, and the 4-page supplement on shorts, is surely even more rare!
