Wir Gehoren Zusammen Wir Deutsche Am Rhein (literally translates to "We Belong Together We Germans On the Rhine"), the circa 1920s German poster promoting the joining together of the Alsace-Lorraine region with Germany. The Alsace-Lorraine region has long been a source of tension between France and Germany, and the region features a mix of both cultures. France was forced to cede the region to Germany at the conclusion of the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871). Once World War I (WWI) broke out, recovery of the two provinces became the top French war goal, and both the French and German authorities used the inhabitants of Alsace-Lorraine for propaganda purposes. At the conclusion of the war, the region was again in the hands of the French. When France was occupied by Nazi Germany during World War II (WWII), the terms of the armistice specified that French territory would not be modified, but Adolf Hitler drafted an Alsace-Lorraine annexation law in 1940 that he kept secret (expecting to announce it in the event of a German victory). Note that this poster features Alfred Boeld art of the Rhine river with towers on each side connected by ribbons. If anyone knows more about this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

Artist: Alfred Boeld

Condition: good. The poster has darkened and it has creases, defects, areas of paper loss and tears of varying lengths along parts of some edges (see our image). Seven of the tears are backed by conservation tape, as well as some tiny separation at the crossfold. The paper loss affects blank paper and the art is "all there" and certainly after proper restoration the rare historical poster will display well (but bear in mind the poster's condition and the cost of restoration before bidding on it.)
