An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Australian One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 26 1/2" x 33 1/4" [67 x 84 cm]) (Learn More)

Blackmail, the 1929 Alfred Hitchcock English romantic murder blackmail thriller ("The Powerful Talking Picture"; "A Romance of Scotland Yard"; "The first British talkie"; "Mystery, Drama, Suspense, Action."; "See & hear it"; "From Charles Bennett's famous stage play"; about a woman who kills a man in self defense, but another man who witnessed the murder blackmails her, and her lover is the detective who is investigating the case, and the blackmailer dies, falling through the glass dome at the top of the British Museum; at the end, the girl, not knowing the blackmailer has died, goes to Scotland Yard to confess, but just before she can, she learns of his death, and she and her detective lover are free to leave!) starring Anny Ondra (she was married to director Carl Lamac, and was a major star in Germany in the 1920s and 1930s; she continued working with her husband after they were divorced, and in 1933, she married boxer Max Schmeling, and they appeared in "Knockout" together, and remained married for over 50 years, until her passing in 1987), John Longden, Donald Calthrop, Cyril Ritchard, Sara Allgood, and Charles Paton. Note that this was originally intended to be a silent movie, but after the massive success of The Jazz Singer, it was decided that parts of this would be given sound. Apparently, Hitchcock thought this ridiculous and had the entire movie filmed in sound, making it England's first all-talking movie. Also, star Anny Ondra had a very thick accent, so Hitchcock hired another actress to speak her lines as Ondra mouthed the words, so her part was in effect "dubbed", even though it was not in the modern sense, where a different voice is added post production (that technology did not exist in 1929).

Important Added Info: Note that posters from this Alfred Hitchcock movie (his first "talkie") are unbelievably rare. We have previously auctioned a U.S. window card and an Australian daybill, and no other posters from any country! This poster was found by a devoted Alfred Hitchcock collector many years ago. He tried extensively for many years to locate an image of the complete poster, or a pressbook that showed the poster, but never was able to do so, and finally, he had this incomplete poster mounted onto linen that is the full size of the complete poster. He had hoped to eventually locate the rest of the image, but now has decided to auction the poster "as is". Obviously, this is a true "museum piece", and if the remainder of the image can ever be located, it absolutely must be restored! Note that the portion of the poster that is present contains the entire title, all the main credits, including "Directed by Alfred Hitchcock", and it also features an image of the knife which is a critical plot element! Of course, please do not bid on this poster unless you can accept this very significant defect.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: poor. As described above, only approximately two-thirds of the poster is present. There were also stains and small paper loss in the credits at left and stains in the background to the right of the window. There was paper loss in the upper left that affects the top of the "BL" of the title. Overall, the poster was in poor condition prior to linenbacking. The owner had the poster backed as it was. Obviously, if one can ever locate any kind of image of the complete poster, even a small one from a magazine, newspaper, or even in a movie, then one could have the rest of the poster recreated. And the chances of anyone ever finding another example of this poster complete are very unlikely, but if that "second" example ever surfaces, then that would make the restoration far easier. In any event, bear all of the above in mind before bidding on this incredibly rare poster.
