The Unpainted Woman (released in other English-speaking countries as "The Marriage Gamble"), the 1919 Tod Browning silent crime romantic farmland melodrama ("In the Universal Special Attraction"; based on the story "Prairie Gold" by Sinclair Lewis; about a Swedish immigrant girl who is romanced by the son of a rich family; when he marries her, the family disowns him, and he becomes a mill worker; they have a child, but he becomes an alcoholic and dies in a bar fight; she buys a small farm and works it herself, and a drifter comes and helps her, but when there is a fire, he is almost lynched, but it turns out the fire was set by a jealous rival, and the woman and the drifter marry and run the farm together) starring Mary MacLaren, Thurston Hall, David Butler, Laura La Varnie, and Fritzi Ridgeway. Note that this movie combines the talents of one of the most famous directors ever in film, and one of the greatest American writers who ever lived, and both of them were at the beginnings of their careers! The story was written by Sinclair Lewis before his great success in 1920 with "Main Street" (he had only written one other story that had been adapted into a movie, and that was a 1916 short), but his typical theme of a very strong woman struggling to survive in a traditionally all-man's world is present here. The director, Tod Browning, had been making many movies at Universal, but it would be several years before he would team up with Lon Chaney Sr. to make "The Unholy Three", which led to his legendary string of horror movies at Universal. Finally, if the above plot summary seems very familiar, even though you surely have not seen the movie, it is because writer/director Robert Benton "borrowed" heavily from this movie in writing his 1984 movie, "Places in the Heart". Note that this is a "lost" film, which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist.

Important Added Info: Note that we have auctioned only one three-sheet poster for this title and no other movie paper from it until we were consigned these lobby cards!

Condition: very good. Two of the cards have slightly darkened mainly around the edges. The card pictured at lower left has a tear at center right and a diagonal crease at lower right and both are repaired with tape from the back. The rare cards are otherwise in pretty nice condition.
