An Undated (probably late 1930s or early 1940s) Re-Release Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More)

Hell's House, the 1932 Paul Gangelin & B. Harrison Orkow bad teens reform school bootlegging crime melodrama ("A human symphony for all ages!"; about a teenage boy who is orphaned and idolizes a bootlegger, and he goes to work for him, and takes the blame for him when something goes wrong, and he is sent to reform school!) starring Pat O'Brien, Junior Durkin, Frank Coghlan Jr., Emma Dunn, and Bette Davis (very young in this role!). Note that this movie came out before Bette Davis was a star, and she plays the minor role of the bootlegger's girlfriend, and is not billed or pictured on the original posters, and rightfully so. But soon after the movie's release, she became a star, there was a very deceptive re-release of this movie, on which she was the top star!

Important Added Info: Note that Astor Pictures re-released lots of classic Hollywood movies in the 1940s. It seems that it came into existence around 1938, because that is the earliest year we have for it, and there were a bunch of great movies released by them that year, so it seems likely they started by buying the rights to a bunch of movies at once in 1938. It also seems likely that this poster would date from that first group of releases in 1938, since Bette Davis had become a giant star in the six years since this movie was first made. But none of the Astor posters are dated, so it makes it difficult to confirm any of this. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

Condition: fair to good. The card had a tear and small paper loss in the middle of the left border, and some other border defects. It has a Spanish language title stamped in the lower right above the title. Someone had the wacky idea of "restoring" this card by gluing it on top of another lobby card! This made the card much more sturdy, but there is slight bleed-through from the card underneath in the stars' faces. Please read our description above and look at our super-sized image before placing a bid on this card.
