An Original Vintage Paperbacked German Political Campaign Poster (measures 23 1/2" x 33" [60 x 84 cm]) (Learn More) Liste 2 Wahlt Sozialdemokraten (literally translates to "List 2 Vote Social Democrats"), the 1932 German political poster encouraging young and first-time voters to choose the Social Democratic Party of Germany, and featuring an image by Herbert Kriedemann of a worker with the symbol of the Iron Front (a paramilitary organization) on his shirt. Kriedemann was later twice captured and released by the Gestapo but he continued working for the labor movement. After the war he was member of the West German parliament and a member of the European Parliament. The Social Democratic Party of Germany (Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands or SPD) is a social-democratic political party in Germany which was founded in 1863. In the years after World War I, this party was part of a coalition government in 1918 to 1921, 1923, and 1928 to 1930 (and this poster is from the 1930 elections, in which the SPD won enough votes to be part of the government). In 1933, Adolf Hitler and the Nazis pushed forward the "Enabling Act", which gave Hitler dictatorial powers, and only the SPD voted against it, and once it was passed, Hitler abolished the SPD, and the members were imprisoned, killed, or went into exile. In 1945, the party was reformed. It remains an important political party in Germany, and today it is one of the two major contemporary political parties in Germany, along with the Christian Democratic Union (CDU).
