An Original Vintage Autographed German 3 1/2" x 5 1/2" [9 x 14 cm] Postcard (Learn More) Elisabeth Bergner was an Austro-Hungarian (in what is now Ukraine) actress from the 1920s to the 1980s. She was born in 1897 and made her stage debut in Vienna in 1914. In 1924, she made her first movie, and that same year, she made a movie with director Paul Czinner, which led to a personal and professional relationship. Bergner and Czinner were Jewish, and when the Nazis rose to power, they went first to London and then to Hollywood. She did not have much success in Hollywood, so she went to Broadway, where she had much success, including in The Two Mrs. Carrolls. She had a fan who waited for her after every performance, and she became friendly with the young female fan, until she became worried about the fan's mental health, and she told the story to a friend, which became the basis for All About Eve! Some of her movies include: 49th Parallel, Ariane, Escape Me Never (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), and Cry of the Banshee. Czinner passed away in 1972, and she passed away in 1986 at the age of 88. Important Added Info: Note that this postcard has been personally autographed (signed) by Elisabeth Bergner! Note that this is from a remarkable collection of 26 items (mostly postcards and German Ross postcards) we were consigned from the estate of the late Jan Wahl. Mr. Wahl wrote over 100 children's books and received many awards, including the Coretta Scott King Prize. Throughout his career, he had a great love of silent film, and he collected many items from silent films, including the 26 items we are currently auctioning. Some of them are framed, because they were on the walls of Mr. Wahl's house! Finally, note that this does not come with a certificate of authenticity, but given the fact that Mr. Wahl purchased this item decades ago, and given that he was an expert in such items, we think it is incredibly likely the signature is authentic. This is a rare opportunity to purchase autographed items from great silent film stars that have a wonderful provenance! As is true of all the signed items we are currently auctioning, we give every buyer 30 days in which to review what they purchased and they can return any item as long as it is within 30 days of the end of the auction. On non-signed items, we give a "lifetime guarantee" on everything we auction, but on signed items, we give the above modified guarantee of 30 days after the auction closes. Condition: very good to fine. Learn More about condition grades
