Date Sold 12/4/2008Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Linenbacked Special Movie Star Personality Poster (measures 10 3/4" x 14") (Learn More) Greta Garbo was a legendary romantic Swedish actress from the 1924 to 1941 (she retired at the age of 35, still extremely popular, and lived in seclusion for many decades afterwards, living by her trademark expression, "I want to be alone"). Almost all other major leading ladies of the mid 1920s had their careers diminished or ruined by the coming of sound, but not Garbo, all the more remarkable because she was not native English-speaking and she had a strong accent. She first rose to prominence in a movie in her native Sweden, and then attracted the interest of Hollywood, but she would only sign a contract if they would sign her director as well, and MGM agreed! Some of her movies include: Ninotchka (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), Queen Christina, Grand Hotel, Anna Christie (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), Romance (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), and Camille (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film). Garbo passed away in 1990 at the age of 84. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we know nothing about the origins of this small poster! It is not printed on a thin paper, but it is also not on the weight of paper that deluxe stills were printed on (it is somewhere in between). It might be one of the fan photos that were distributed by studios in the 1930s, with a facsimile signature of the star printed in the photo. It appears to clearly be vintage from the 1930s, but we know nothing more about it. It is possible it was removed from a trade magazine or fan magazine. Please do not bid on this poster unless you can accept the uncertainties as to where it came from and when it was made. Condition: good to very good. The poster had a 5" tear in the middle of the left border (ending at the edge of Garbo's neck) and a 2" tear in the right border (in Garbo's shoulder). There was a 1" tear in the upper left border. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the restoration of the above defects.
