An Original Vintage Paperbacked World War I Poster (measures 28 1/4" x 40 3/4" [72 x 104 cm]) (Learn More)

Pro Patria, the 1917 U.S. World War I (WWI) recruitment poster ("Join Army for period of war") encouraging men to join the military just for the remainder of World War I, and featuring Welsh art of cavalry soldiers holding the American flag and the flag of the Army. Note that Pro Patria means "for one's country" in Latin
Artist: Welsh
Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this unusual World War I poster. It is printed on a fairly heavy paper stock, while most World War I posters of this size were printed on thin poster paper. It is one of three similar posters that we were consigned, which we are auctioning in three separate auctions. All three were mounted to a paper backing many years ago, but only the slightest of restoration was performed (it was obviously done primarily to conserve the poster). We have never auctioned any of the three before, and may well never auction any of them again, because they are surely incredibly rare! Also note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a light paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (it means that the poster must be handled carefully, as the backing does not give it much added strength, but it is similar to having an unrestored poster, and yet it has been properly preserved). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards.

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. As noted above, someone mounted the poster onto a paper backing, but primarily for preservation reasons. The poster was folded once in each direction, and there are creases and some tiny surface paper loss on parts of both folds. It has darkening in the left 3" of the horizontal fold. It has creases in the bottom left corner and some smudges and scuffs scattered in the white background areas. Someone performed very slight restoration to the crossfold area, but otherwise did no restoration. The poster can be displayed and enjoyed as it is, or certainly, additional restoration could be performed. Either way, the new owner of this poster will have a wonderful poster to display on their wall!
