A Linenbacked French Advertising Poster (measures 43 1/4" x 118" [110 x 300 cm]) (Learn More)

Petrole Hahn (literally translates to "Hahn Oil"), the 1890s French advertising poster (with taglines that translate to "Treasure of Hair"; "Antiseptic. Regenerator. Does not change hair color. Refuse imitations") promoting the purchase of a hair-care product, and featuring artwork of a satisfied customer holding the product in front of a mirror. Note that Swiss pharmacist Charles Hahn used petroleum and essential oils to create the product in 1885. In 1896, Lyon druggist Francois Vibert signed a contract to sell 6000 bottles of the product (which he did in less than 2 years) before being told the "secret formula" which would allow him to manufacture it himself. Once Vibert was able to do this, he changed the name to Petrole Hahn Pour Les Cheveux. By the 1960s and 1970s, Vibert's company was producing 25,000 bottles a day. In 1985, the brand was purchased by Procter & Gamble before being sold to another corporation in 1998.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had a very large area of paper loss at the top of the girl's red dress extending a little bit to the left of it, and extending 7" to the right of it. There were also many tears and some areas of paper loss around the edges and some paper loss in the yellow area at top right between the words, plus other defects scattered throughout. Overall, the poster was in fair condition prior to linenbacking. A talented restorer did a nice job recreating the missing areas, and it is likely there is not another example of this poster. It will display well on the new owner's wall, but bear in mind the major restoration it has had.
