An Unfolded German Special Poster (measures 32 3/4" x 47 1/4" [83 x 120 cm]) (Learn More)

Hexensabbat (literally translates to "Witches' Sabbath"), the 1930s German annual art festival featuring works by local artists. Note that this poster features wild art by Roman Feldmeyer. Note that this series of carnivals (one was held annually in Munich) was a uniquely German phenomenon that began in the 1400s. It involved Pagan rituals and many of the early participants were strongly anti-Semitic, portraying Jews as Devil worshipers. The festivals continued over the centuries and when Adolf Hitler became the leader of Germany, he banned all expressionist and "modern" art as "decadent", but oddly, he allowed the Hexensabbat carnivals, and the posters created for them, to continue (perhaps this related to the years he lived in Munich as a young man, including when he was in prison near the city, when he wrote "Mein Kampf", and perhaps he did not have a philosophical difference with the Hexensabbat)! There were posters created for many of these festivals, but they are extremely rare!

Artist: Roman Feldmeyer
Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare poster. We have never auctioned one in all our years of auctioning! The people who produced these festivals created wonderful posters like this for each year (some times more than one in a year), and we have previously auctioned ones that were created in 1933, 1936, 1937 and 1939, and they all have wonderful images and all are completely different from each other. We were unable to determine which year this poster was created for, but it is surely from the 1930s. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

Condition: good. The poster has creases and tears around the edges and there is tape on the back of some of them. There is thin tape on the back of the entire right border and it has darkened the front. There are tears and paper loss across the top of the poster, but fortunately it only affects the blank border and the red background. Obviously this wonderful poster can be restored, but bear in mind its defects and cost of restoration before bidding.
