An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Three-Sheet Movie Poster (3sh; measures 41" x 81" [104 x 206 cm]) (Learn More)

Over the Goal, the 1937 Noel M. Smith romantic college football sports crime comedy ("The greatest gridiron hit in years"; "You'll cheer those heroes of the pigskin"; about a college football star who is injured, and he promises his girlfriend he won't play in the big game, but at the last minute, she decides she can accept him playing, so then crooks who bet on the other team kidnap him, but everything works out in the end) starring William Hopper, June Travis, Johnnie Davis, Mabel Todd, Gordon Oliver, Eddie 'Rochester' Anderson, Hattie McDaniel, Carole Landis (in an uncredited bit part as a co-ed!), and "a great cast of stars". Note that star William Hopper was the 22 year old son of famed columnist Hedda Hopper, who pushed him into acting, but his heart wasn't in it. After some minor roles, he got this lead role, but did not get noticed from it, and after some more minor roles, he went into the military during World War II, and afterwards, spent nine years as a car salesman! He finally got a big break when he was cast as Paul Drake in TV's "Perry Mason"!

Important Added Info: Note that ANY movie paper from this movie is incredibly rare. We have only previously auctioned some lobby cards and a still from this movie (and NO other movie paper of any kind) until we received this "other company" three-sheet, which is the first poster we have ever auctioned for this movie (so this is certainly the most difficult football movie to collect a poster from)! This was printed by Associated Displays Corporation which was a company based in New York City. Before it was discovered by noted poster dealer/historian Walter Reuben, collectors did not know the name of this company (and thought it to be located in the Midwest), and it is often referred to as the "other company" (and we will continue to refer to it that way, since collectors know it that way). From 1936 to roughly 1941, this company printed its own one-sheets and lobby card sets (and a very few inserts, half-sheets, three-sheets, 40x60s and stills) for three major studio movies (Warner Brothers, Paramount and United Artists, but no other studios). The items almost always feature a tiny legal disclaimer and cast credits only. The posters and lobby cards are from the original release of the movie, and almost always have completely different artwork from the regular studio release. They did this by combining elements from different film scenes onto one poster or card. Sometimes, "other company" posters have images that are the equal of those from the regular studio release posters.

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good to fine. The poster had tiny paper loss at just a few crossfolds and a very few creases, scuffs, and tiny tears on parts of some folds. Overall, the poster was in very good to fine condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well!
