A Linenbacked German Special Poster (measures 47" x 67" [119 x 170 cm]) (Learn More)

Aufgalopp (a combination of "Auf" & "Galopp", meaning to gallop off/to break into a gallop), the 1937 German poster promoting a festival/carnival to take place in Munich, Germany. Note that this poster features Ludwig Lutz Ehrenberger art of masked party-goers and a woman riding a white horse while drinking champagne. Munich (the Bavarian capital) used to be a carnival stronghold from the turn of the 19th to the 20th century until well into the 1930s, and it is in fact alive and kicking today. In 1914 alone, there were 533 masked balls and 145 black and white balls. This phenomenon of decadent hustle and bustle was created in particular by the artists of the Schwabinger Boheme, at first in the form of wild studio festivals, but increasingly also by artists' balls. The Munich racing club was founded in 1865 and since 1897, the site in Riem has been used as a racetrack. The association is non-profit and has the mandate to carry out horse tests to maintain and improve thoroughbred breeding. The Munich racing club can look back on more than 145 years of history, making it the oldest sports facility in Munich.
Artist: Ludwig Lutz Ehrenberger
Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this German poster!

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster was printed in two sections. Each section was unfolded and there was slight darkening in the area where the two sections join. Otherwise, the poster was in nice condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well!
