(literally translates to "Drivers! Careful!"), the 1930 German public automobile car safety poster encouraging people to drive with care, and featuring Ludwig Hohlwein art of the deadly result of an automobile running over a bicyclist. Note that Ludwig Hohlwein was a German artist from the 1890s until his passing in 1949. He is one of the best known German poster artists (though his reputation suffered because of his work with the Nazis)! Initially an architect student who illustrated for newspapers, he went on to design book decorations, booklets, and advertising posters. He joined the Nazi Regime in 1933 after refusing an offer to emigrate to the United States, and created government program posters as well as advertisements for the 1936 Munich Olympics. Poster historian Alain Weill says "Hohlwein was the most prolific and brilliant German posterist of the 20th century. Beginning with his first efforts, Hohlwein found his style with disconcerting facility. It would vary little for the next forty years. The drawing was perfect from the start, nothing seemed alien to him, and in any case, nothing posed a problem for him. His figures are full of touches of color and a play of light and shade that brings them out of their background and gives them substance". NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Ludwig Hohlwein Important Added Info: Note that many countries have created public safety posters warning of the dangers of automobile accidents, but we doubt that any of them have been nearly as graphic as this one by Ludwig Hohlwein! It surely caused German car drivers (and German bicyclists) to think twice when riding on the streets of Germany in 1930! Condition: very good. The poster has clear tape on the front of part of the right blank border, which has darkened, but very fortunately, it solely affects the blank border. The poster has a tiny pinhole in each corner and a 1" tear in the bottom border that has a piece of tape on the back. Otherwise, the poster is in wonderful condition, especially considering its age.
