A Vintage Softcover Book (measures 9 1/4" x 12 1/4" [23 x 31 cm]; 112 pages) (Learn More) Red Book of Motion Picture Talent, the 1920s studio book ("Official casting directory") featuring images and information about actors and actresses of the time. The only example of this studio book we have auctioned is volume 1 number 2 from November 1924, and it says "Published Monthly", so we know that it started in 1924, but we don't know how many issues it ran for. The one issue we have seen is square-bound and has 112 pages. It is filled with illustrated ads for people looking to be booked in the motion picture industry, and it also has larger lists with people's names and their phone numbers! It was obviously like the much later Yellow Pages, where everyone got a free listing, but you could pay a lot extra to get a feature ad, and even a full-page ad, and no doubt it was distributed free to casting directors throughout Hollywood. The stars are divided into cool categories like "underworld types", "well dressed women - young", "fat women", etc. One would think that established stars would not have paid to have feature ads, but there are some ads from actors who became pretty big stars, including Clara Bow and Bebe Daniels (although, to be fair, both of those were not yet established stars in 1924). Important Added Info: Note that we have pictured the front cover, the title page, and the interior page that shows the publishing information, and one or more interior 2-page spreads. Condition: good. The covers have separated from the rest of the magazine, and there are stains on the covers and on the first interior page. There is a small stain at the right edge of most of the pages, in the blank area. Otherwise, the interior pages are in pretty good condition (see our images). Learn More about condition grades
