A Linenbacked French Advertising Poster (measures 11" x 15" [28 x 38 cm]) (Learn More)

Halle aux Chapeaux (literally translates to "Hall of Hats"), the 1890s French advertising poster (with taglines that translate to "The largest millinery warehouse in the capital. The most elegant of all Paris for Men, Ladies & Children") promoting the purchase of a hat from Halle aux Chapeaux located at 17 Rue de Belleville, and featuring Jules Cheret artwork of a child wearing a bonnet.

Artist: d'apres Jules Cheret
Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this French advertising poster! Jules Cheret posters from the 1890s measured larger than this, and because of this (and because of the "d'apres" before the artist's signature; see below), we know this is not from the 1890s. Our best guess is that it is a revised version from the early 1900s. Please do not bid on this poster unless you can accept the uncertainty as to when it is from. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Also note that this poster reuses the Jules Cheret art from the first printing of this poster, but because it was not the first time the art was used, the poster designer added "d'apres", to signify that.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster was never folded and had very minor border wear. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above.
