A Set of 2 Vintage Special Promotional Books (measure 13 1/2" x 17" [34 x 43 cm]; 38 pages) (Learn More)

Cecil B. DeMille's Unconquered, the 1947 Cecil B. DeMille colonial-America historic romantic adventure epic ("The story of those dauntless men and women who dared a thousand dangers to keep America unconquered, as they drew the map of a new nation across the wilderness in lines of their own blood!"; "From a people like this came America's heritage... in a story like this lies America's greatness!"; "'I bought this woman for my own... and I'll kill the man who touches her!'"; "Based on the novel 'The Judas Tree' by Neil H. Swanson") starring Gary Cooper, Paulette Goddard, Howard Da Silva, Boris Karloff, Cecil Kellaway, Ward Bond, Henry Wilcoxon, Lloyd Bridges, Mike Mazurki, and Iron Eyes Cody. Note that Boris Karloff was pretty typecast into horror roles by the mid 1930s. In this movie, and in Tap Roots, made the following year, he plays a Native American Indian, but he was still villainous!

Important Added Info: Note that for major films, studios would sometimes create elaborate hardcover or softcover books to send to theaters, rather than simple brochures, to try to impress on the theaters how important the production was! In the case of this movie, Cecil B. DeMille had a very elaborate oversized spiral-bound softcover book made to promote the movie, and he had 18 "tipped-in" photos carefully inserted into each spiral-bound book. Interestingly, he also had a less elaborate version of the same book made, which had the same images inside, but those WERE NOT "tipped-in", but were simply printed on the pages. No doubt the larger theaters received the elaborate book and the smaller theaters received the less elaborate one. We have previously auctioned an example of the elaborate book, but in this auction, we have BOTH books (the one with the tipped-in photos and the one with the printed photos)! On the one with the tipped-in photos, one could certainly remove the tipped-in photos (most are very lightly glued in), and they could then be sold individually, but it would be a shame to destroy this cool artifact, but that will be a decision for the new owner of both books to make. We have pictured a number of interior pages of the more elaborate version, but only the cover of the other version, since they are identical, except for the tipped-in photos.

Condition: good to very good. The version with the tipped-in photos has a diagonal crease in the top right corner of the front cover, and some small stains on the cover, but is otherwise in nice condition. The other book has a number of stains on the cover and some small stains scattered on the interior.
