An Autographed Letter (measures 8 1/2" x 11" [22 x 28 cm]) (Learn More) Marie Dressler was a Canadian actress from the 1910s to the 1930s. She was born in 1868, and was on Broadway in her 20s, and in 1914, starred in "Tillie's Punctured Romance" over a very young Charlie Chaplin; but her career waned and she quit films a few years later returning to Broadway, and by the late 1920s, her career seemed over; but legendary producer Irving Thalberg cast her in "Anna Christie" in 1930, and she rapidly became a major star, in spite of her advanced age and plain face, appearing in many of MGM's greatest movies, as well as a series of very successful comedies; she received the Best Actress Oscar for Min and Bill in 1930, and is probably best remembered for her role in Dinner at Eight; sadly, she died of cancer in 1934 at the age of 65. Some of her other movies include: The Patsy, Tugboat Annie, Emma (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), and The Girl Said No Important Added Info: Note that this "letter" (which is not really a letter, because it is not addressed to anyone, but it was surely mailed to someone, because it comes with the envelope it was sent in) has been personally autographed (signed) by Marie Dressler! It consists of an 8 1/2" x 11" sheet, which has much writing on both sides, all handwritten by Miss Dressler, and which was used in her book, "My Own Story", published in 1934. She signed it on the back page, and included with it is a 3 3/4" x 5 3/4" envelope, which has her signature on it as well (see our images). The letter has REALLY fascinating content! Miss Dressler is addressing Hollywood directly, and telling "those who are responsible for choosing and making our films" that they can't "doctor filth, guilt it with so-called glamour, and thereby make it acceptable to decent people". She flat out warns Hollywood movie makers that if they don't "mend their ways, then the churches, the schools, and decent people will rise up"! See our images for exactly what she wrote!
