A Group of 2 Original Vintage Trade Ad Samples (measure 9" x 11" [23 x 28 cm] and 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) The City That Never Sleeps, the 1924 James Cruze silent New York City Prohibition-era family relationship romantic crime thriller (about a widow with a young daughter whose husband is killed, and she opens a speakeasy, and she doesn't want her daughter to grow up in that life, so she puts her in the home of a rich family, and years later, the girl, now grown, starts frequenting the speakeasy, and she gets in big trouble and her mother, who she doesn't recognize, saves her, and they are reunited) starring Ricardo Cortez, Louise Dresser, Kathlyn Williams, Virginia Lee Corbin, Pierre Gendron, Jim Farley, Ben Hendricks Jr., and Vondell Darr. Note that this is a "lost" film, which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that Vincent Trotta was Paramount Pictures' chief art director in the 1920s and 1930s. While he was an accomplished artist himself, he spent much of his career supervising the art created by other artists for the posters and ads used to promote Paramount Pictures, including many of their most famous ones (Metropolis is one!). What is offered in this auction is a "tear sheet" of an ad that Mr. Trotta designed. He would be sent these tear sheets to make any final changes, or to approve them as printed. Tear sheets from pre-World War II movies are extremely rare. Our consignor obtained this trade ad sample (and four other trade ad samples and five tear sheets, which are similar) at one time when he purchased a collection. In addition to these ten items, there were two receipts, one from Warner's Features to Mr. Trotta and one from Famous Players-Lasky to Mr. Trotta, and our consignor asked us to picture these two items on the auction for the Metropolis tear sheet. We will be returning the letters to the consignor, but he wanted bidders to see them to make it clear that these ten items came directly from Mr. Trotta's estate. Condition: good to very good. The larger sample has creases, smudges, and small tears around the edges, with small paper loss in the upper right corner. The smaller one is in nice condition! Learn More about condition grades
