An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked British Quad Movie Poster (BQ; Quad Crown; measures 30" x 40" [76 x 102 cm]) (Learn More)

Cry of the Werewolf, the 1944 Henry Levin New Orleans Louisiana female werewolf monster gypsy horror thriller ("Shiver... as strange voodoo rites are revealed!"; "When the bells toll at midnight... Werewolves prowl the Earth!") starring Nina Foch, Stephen Crane, Osa Massen, Blanche Yurka, and Barton MacLane. Note that a year earlier, Columbia Pictures made "The Return of the Vampire" (which also included Nina Foch), which had a full fledged werewolf in it, but in this movie, the "werewolf" is actually a woman who turns into a literal wolf, making it much more like Val Lewton's "Cat People"! The opening credits have a wolf eating them as they appear on the screen!

Important Added Info: Note that we only auctioned this poster once before (not surprising, because it is an English poster from during World II; see below)! That one, which we auctioned six years ago, has now been reconsigned to us, so it is still the only example of this poster we have auctioned. Not only that, but ANY posters from this movie are extremely rare (we have auctioned three U.S. one-sheets and a 40x60 over the years, but no other first release posters at all, and no other English posters at all). We once auctioned a 1949 re-release half-sheet, and perhaps that quick re-release helps explain why the first release posters are so rare. Note that this movie was released in England in 1944, when there was a massive paper shortage due to World War II. Many posters at that time were printed on the back of other posters, or sections of other posters. This particular poster was printed on the back of part of another poster, but because the poster is backed, it is difficult to tell what poster that might have been, but it surely was not a complete poster, and rather just a part of a large poster, perhaps a six-sheet. Because it was printed on the back of another poster, it shows through in various parts of the poster (mostly as a sort of light "ghosting"). See our image to better see exactly what bleed-through there is.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster was printed on the back of another poster (see above). The dark parts of the printing from the back show through to the front in the light colored areas, mostly in the borders and the white background, but also in the man's white shirt. Otherwise, the poster had pretty minor fold and border wear. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was well backed, but the restorer left alone the bleed-through described above, but it is not very distracting (see our super-sized image).
