An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More)

The Gold Rush, the classic 1925 Charles Chaplin silent Alaska Yukon rags-to-riches romantic slapstick comedy ("A Dramatic Comedy"; "Written and Directed [and scored] by Charlie Chaplin"; Chaplin is a prospector who goes to Alaska by himself in search of gold, and he falls in love with a dance hall girl who doesn't even notice him, and he gets lost and has many adventures) starring Charlie Chaplin (Charles Chaplin), Mack Swain, Tom Murray, Georgia Hale, and Henry Bergman. Note that this movie not only contains the classic sequence of the snowbound Chaplin and Mack Swain sharing a shoe and eating it because they are starving, but it also contains the equally classic scene of Chaplin putting two dinner rolls on forks and making them "dance"! Also note that the movie was filmed "on location", but only for a small part of the movie did they go to the High Sierras. For the close scenes, Chaplin had artificial mountains created out of chicken wire and burlap covering 200 tons of plaster, 285 tons of salt, and 100 barrels of flour, and the artificial ice and snow was made of the same materials. 4 carloads of "cornfetti" were used for the blizzard scenes. They also transported much of the same material to the Sierra mountains to enhance the scenes shot there. The entire production took over a year, from first filming to final cut! This is surely Charlie Chaplin's greatest movie, and it is hard to argue with anyone describing it as the single greatest silent movie ever made, and both the movie and Chaplin are known the world over, even to people who have never seen this movie (but they certainly should see it!).

Important Added Info: Note that first release lobby cards from this movie are incredibly rare. We have only previously auctioned two first release lobby cards from this movie (both 16 years ago, and they sold for $1,326 and $1,592!) until we received this third lobby card! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has.

What IS gelbacking? Learn More

Condition: good. The card had its blank borders trimmed off, slightly extending into the black line at bottom and affecting the bottom of the letters of "MADE IN U.S.A.". There were pieces of tape on the back of the top left and right corners, which discolored the front, and affected the hat and top of the cane. There were two vertical scuff marks down the center of the card between the two stars' heads and some lesser smudges and scuffs scattered in the image. Overall, the card was in good condition prior to restoration. A talented restorer gel backed the card (meaning they backed the card onto a gel material) and they then performed restoration to the above defects, replacing the missing portions of the borders, but you can see signs of the border replacement and the restoration around the edges. Given the card's defects described above, the restorer did a pretty good job, but you can see signs of the defects and the restoration, but the card displays pretty well (see our super-sized images to get a good sense of exactly how the card looks now).
