An Original Vintage Theatrical Deluxe 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Movie Still (Learn More)

The Marriage Clause, the 1926 Lois Weber silent New York City Broadway theater stage acting romantic love triangle melodrama (about a woman who is given a chance to become a Broadway star by a major producer, but he has her sign a contract that forbids her from marrying, and then she falls in love with her director and regrets what she did) starring Francis X. Bushman, Billie Dove, Warner Oland, Henri La Garde, Grace Darmond, Carolynne Snowden, and Oscar Smith. Note that director Lois Weber was the first woman ever to direct a feature-length film (she directed "The Merchant of Venice" in 1914). She had been an actress beginning in 1908, and by 1916, she had become Universal Studios' highest paid director, and she had an assistant director named John Ford! In the early 1920s, her career went downhill, and she made her last movie in 1934, and died penniless in 1939. She is completely forgotten today, except by major film buffs, which is very sad, because she is an extremely important person in the history of movie-making!
