Date Sold 6/19/2016Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Autographed Deluxe 9 1/4" x 12 1/4" [23 x 31 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Greta Garbo was a legendary romantic Swedish actress from the 1924 to 1941 (she retired at the age of 35, still extremely popular, and lived in seclusion for many decades afterwards, living by her trademark expression, "I want to be alone"). Almost all other major leading ladies of the mid 1920s had their careers diminished or ruined by the coming of sound, but not Garbo, all the more remarkable because she was not native English-speaking and she had a strong accent. She first rose to prominence in a movie in her native Sweden, and then attracted the interest of Hollywood, but she would only sign a contract if they would sign her director as well, and MGM agreed! Some of her movies include: Ninotchka (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), Queen Christina, Grand Hotel, Anna Christie (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), Romance (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), and Camille (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film). Garbo passed away in 1990 at the age of 84. Important Added Info: Note that there is a signature on this photo, but it was definitely signed by a secretary to Miss Garbo, and not Miss Garbo herself. Do not bid on it thinking it is signed by Greta Garbo, because it definitely was not! It is, however, a nice vintage Garbo still printed on a slightly textured heavyweight stock. It appears that it was trimmed to fit a frame and it now measures 9 1/4" x 12 1/4" [23 x 31 cm]. Note that this item was consigned to us by a man who has been a major movie memorabilia collector and dealer from the 1970s on. During that time, he would regularly purchase collections of movie memorabilia from both dealers and collectors, and in some of those collections he purchased autographed items. Both we and our consignor feel it is quite likely that the autograph on this item is authentic, but he does not have a certificate of authenticity (unless noted above). Condition: good. The still appears to have been trimmed to fit a frame. It was mounted to a mat, and was removed, but there is much paper residue on the back of the entire still. There is slight glue residue around the edges from when it was framed. Still, it will display really nicely (but of course, remember that it is NOT signed by Miss Garbo, but rather by a secretary).
