SIREN OF THE TROPICS SIREN OF THE TROPICS German program OR search current auctions Auction History Result 9s045 SIREN OF THE TROPICS German program '27 half-naked Josephine Baker on tropical island, rare! Date Sold 9/4/2016Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage German Film Program (measures 9" x 11 1/2" [23 x 29 cm]; 8 pages) (Learn More) La sirene des tropiques (released in English-speaking countries as "Siren of the Tropics"), the 1927 Henri Etievant & Mario Nalpas French silent Caribbean French Antilles tropical island romantic love triangle melodrama (about a rich Frenchman who wants to marry his own goddaughter, but she is in love with a handsome young man, so the Frenchman arranges to have him sent to an island where he owns a plantation, with the promise of allowing him to marry his goddaughter if he does well there, but he arranges with the brutal foreman of the plantation to sabotage his efforts; then the young man stops the foreman from raping a local girl, played by Josephine Baker, and Baker falls in love with him, but is distressed to learn that he wants to return home and marry the other girl) starring Josephine Baker (as Papitou), Georges Melchior, Pierre Batcheff, Regina Dalthy, and Regina Thomas. Note that this was Josephine Baker's first movie, and it was clearly tailored to her, as were her later movies, Zouzou and Princesse Tam-Tam. The assistant director for this movie was none other than Luis Bunuel, who used Pierre Batcheff two years later when he made his first movie, Un Chien Andalou! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that first release 1927 movie paper from this movie is incredibly rare. We had never sold even a single movie paper item from this movie until we received another example of this first release German program in June of 2015, when it auctioned for $487, and now we have a second example of it that is in much better condition! Also note that this program contains unclothed women, so we have placed white bars over those areas, for those who are bothered by such images. Of course, the actual program does not have those white bars! Note that we have provided an image of four of the pages of this 8-page program (we did this by opening it and laying it flat and photographing the front and back cover together, and two of the interior pages together). You can see the four of the 8 pages, and can well determine the exact condition of it from our super-sized image, but realize that there are 4 pages you are not seeing. But of course this means that the front cover appears in the top right of our image, but normally, the program would be folded down the center and you would view the cover by itself (and it will be sent folded as was originally intended). Condition: very good to fine. Learn More about condition grades
