Date Sold 9/17/2017Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) The Quarterback, the 1926 Fred C. Newmeyer silent college university football sports screwball comedy ("Story by W.O. McGeehan and William Slavens McNutt"; "Football game supervised by 'Hurry Up' Yost"; a wacky story of a man who is quarterback of his college football team in 1899, and they lose to their rival, and he vows to stay in school until they beat the rival, and 27 years later, he is still in school, because they have never beaten the rival, and his son is a great football player who can finally let his father leave school, but he doesn't seem eligible to play, although everything works out in the end) starring Richard Dix, Esther Ralston, Harry Beresford, David Butler, and Robert W. Craig. Note that Charles Starrett and Barton MacLane were among the many, many people who had uncredited parts as some of the football players. We don't know if any of the other people who played football players went on to fame, but there probably are at least a few! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that, as noted above, Charles Starrett and Barton MacLane played football players in this movie. It would seem incredibly likely that they are in this candid photo, which seems to show all the extras from the movie, plus some crew members and Richard Dix, seated on the ground second from left. We would think that Starrett and MacLane are in this photo. If anyone can identify them, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Also note that this still (and a number of others we are currently auctioning) has a most unusual provenance. Our consignor's father worked at Paramount Studios between 1925 and 1927, and he was given a number of deluxe stills (and a few regular ones) from then-current films, and he kept them all the years since, and now they have been consigned to us! We put three great portraits from this collection (portraits of Louise Brooks, W.C. Fields, and Clara Bow) in our September Major Auction, and now we have many of the other individual stills in this auction of single stills. This is a wonderful opportunity to acquire these extremely rare stills (and other than some of them measuring under 8x10, which likely occurred prior to them being distributed, they are in quite nice condition, especially considering their age). Condition: good to very good. The still has changed to a sepia color (see our image). Learn More about condition grades
