An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Australian Daybill Movie Poster (measures approximately 15" x 40") (Learn More) Ninotchka, the 1939 Ernst Lubitsch Capitalism-vs-Communism romantic comedy ("Garbo laughs in the greatest comedy hit of the year!"; "A new laughing Garbo"; "Garbo Laughs in the Ernst Lubitsch Comedy Production"; "[Don't Pronounce It - See It!]"; "Based on the original story by Melchior Lengyel"; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; with a screenplay written by Charles Brackett, Billy Wilder and Walter Reisch; about a Soviet Russian woman who travels to Paris, France on business and discovers there is more to life than what Communism offers) starring Greta Garbo (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film; in the title role as Ninotchka), Melvyn Douglas, Ina Claire, Bela Lugosi, Sig Ruman, Felix Bressart (the following year, he had a memorable role in Lubitsch's "The Shop Around the Corner"), and Alexander Granach. Note that this movie was remade in 1957 as a musical with Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse as "Silk Stockings". NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is a rare "long" Australian daybill (is measures 15" x 40"). Since such daybills were only made until 1940, it guarantees that this is from the very first release of this Garbo movie in Australia! Condition: very good. This poster was linenbacked, and one of the following is true: either the poster had very minor defects, and was well backed, OR it had more significant defects, but they were well restored, OR it had some minor defects that were not completely restored, and are somewhat noticeable. You can tell which of the above is the case for this particular poster by reading our "pre-restoration" description and also by looking at our "super-sized" image of the actual poster (we are the only major auction company we know of that gives accurate detailed pre-restoration information about linenbacked posters to our bidders, but we wish everyone did!). The poster had creases and some small tears in the left of the top foldline, including some across the center of Garbo's face. There was a 1/2" x 1" area of paper loss at the middle of the top foldline including some of the bottom of the "G" of "GARBO". There were creases, tears, and small paper loss across the bottom foldline. There were tears and areas of paper loss around the edges of the poster. The poster was well backed. The above defects were well corrected, and are truly not very noticeable at all, even when looking right at the poster. Learn More about condition grades
