Date Sold 8/9/2012Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Japanese Regional Movie Poster (measures 20 1/4" x 26" [51 x 66 cm]) (Learn More) Yokihi (released in the U.S. as "Empress Yang Kwei Fei" and released in other English-speaking countries as "Most Noble Lady"), the 1955 Kenji Mizoguchi Japanese/Hong Kong historical romantic melodrama ("The story of a serving maid too beautiful to be true... even to an emperor!") starring Machiko Kyo (in the title role as Empress Yang Kwei Fei; billed as "Starring the Japanese enchantress of 'Gate of Hell' and 'Rashomon' Machiko Kyo"), Masayuki Mori, and So Yamamura NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is a Japanese regional poster. In the mid-1950s, when the Japanese movie industry was first taking hold, posters were made in non-standard sizes, and there would be one poster for the major city release, and a different poster for the regional release. This poster is the one created in 1955 for the regional release of this movie in Japan. We previously sold a different example of this regional poster, and it was very similar in size to this one, and both posters may have been slightly trimmed, or they may have been created that way. Neither poster originally measured the standard B2 size, because these regional posters did not measure that (and did not have blank borders). Note that another example of this poster that we auctioned sold in October of 2010 for $1,130. Finally, note that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube. Condition: good. The poster appears to have been slightly trimmed (but because this is a regional poster, it is difficult to know if it has been trimmed, and if so, it appears that very little was trimmed), and there is some paper loss in the upper right corner extending into the text area that has been neatly repaired with paper and tape from the back and some paint from the front. There is conservation tape on the back of the poster around the edges (apparently for reinforcement). There is a 1" vertical tear in Kyo's clothing left of center and there are horizontal creases throughout the poster from it being flattened while rolled. Other than the defects described above, the poster is in pretty nice condition and after linenbacking it will surely display nicely with very little paint restoration needed in the central image area!
