An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More)

Frankenstein, the classic 1931 James Whale Universal monster horror thriller ("The monster that terrorized the world!"; "The Man Who Made a Monster"; "Warning! The monster is loose!"; "Based upon the Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley Story"; "Adapted by John L. Balderston from the play by Peggy Webling"; the first of the Universal "Frankenstein" movies, and regarded as one of the finer movies of any genre, in large part due to the marvelous acting of Boris Karloff, and the marvelous direction of James Whale!) starring Colin Clive (as Dr. Herbert V. Frankenstein), Boris Karloff (as the Frankenstein monster), Edward Van Sloan, Fredric Kerr, Mae Clarke, Dwight Frye (extremely memorable as Fritz), and John Boles

Important Added Info: Note that for collectors of horror lobby cards, the "Holy Grail" of cards is an original 1931 Frankenstein card (1931 Dracula cards are also wonderful, but there are many more of those that have survived than Frankenstein, for unknown reasons). In 1990, we auctioned a very historic set of Frankenstein lobby cards, each in its own auction. What made them historic was that they came from the same theater as the only surviving example of the Frankenstein teaser one-sheet (they were found together)! In the years since, we have only auctioned three more 1931 Frankenstein cards (two in "poor" condition, and one which was one of the poor condition cards after restoration). NOW WE HAVE BEEN RE-CONSIGNED ONE OF THE 8 CARDS WE AUCTIONED IN 1990! It is 100% surely the very same card from that historic 1990 auction (the first Bruce Hershenson Christie's auction), and it is also one of the eight cards that was found together with the teaser one-sheet! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has.

Condition: very good. As noted above, this card is the very same card we auctioned in 1990. It had a 2" semi-circular tear near the middle of the left border, extending into the background, with some tiny surface paper loss in the background along that tear. The card had yellow stains scattered across the bottom 1" and a yellow stain below the extreme left of the image, extending through the light blue border and into the "C" of "CARL" (this yellow staining was on many of the cards from this theater, and was is solely on the surface of the card). There was also a tiny yellow stain in the center of the top blank border and a tiny pinhole in the background area equally between the two figures. There were pencil marks in the center of the torch. Other than these defects, the card was in surprisingly nice condition. Somewhere between 1990 and now, someone had the above defects restored, without having the card backed. The tear has been mended with glue, and the stains were touched up on the front of the card, but not on the back (see our images). The card has NOT been bleached, so there are a few very faint smudges around the edges. The card will display wonderfully on the new owner's wall (and given how rarely we have auctioned 1931 Frankenstein cards, it may be quite some time before we are consigned another, and of course, this is one of the best cards from the 1931 set!).
